Trekking & Transforming Family Dynamics on The Camino de Santiago

Lauren Duke holds a master’s degree in psychology focused on physiology and body based behavior, and studies how movement helps us process emotion. In 2023, she tested that work on a 535 mile Camino de Santiago hike across Spain with her family. The month long trek surfaced unresolved family dynamics, leaving no real option but to keep walking and stay in relationship.

What Are You Willing to Walk 500 Miles For?

Many people know what it feels like to fight with family, but what happens when we begin to realize that we don't have to change the people in order to change the pattern? Author, educator and storyteller Lauren Dollie Duke shares her journey of walking 500 miles with her family, and how long-distance walking provided the perfect modality for intergenerational change and healing. Her message will encourage you to look in the mirror and see how we might all change the roles we play in our relationships, especially those into which we were born. Lauren Dollie Duke, an author, educator, psychological storyteller, entrepreneur, and community activist, has been a driving force in her community for over twenty years. Her role as a Yoga teacher and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner is not just about the BodyMind Continuum but also about fostering a sense of community and social change.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community

Why We Keep Repeating the Pain: Healing Repetition Compulsion

Why do we keep repeating the same painful patterns… even when we know better?

In this powerful and deeply honest conversation, Wendy sits down with somatic practitioner and author Lauren Duke to unpack the truth behind repetition compulsion, the unconscious pull that keeps us stuck in familiar cycles of pain, conflict, and disconnection.

Lauren shares the extraordinary story of walking across Spain on the Camino de Santiago with her family, a bold, healing journey that helped her finally interrupt lifelong patterns of avoidance, reactivity, and emotional pain.

Together, they explore how our nervous systems are wired to repeat what hasn’t been resolved, how awareness creates the opportunity for change, and why real healing often begins when we’re willing to look in the mirror and take responsibility for our part.

This episode will challenge you, empower you, and remind you that even the deepest family wounds can be transformed.

Deborah Kobylt LIVE

Sometimes, life can be one big SHiTHOUSE, and that’s the title of Lauren Dollie Duke’s book, and this is one fascinating “I can’t put this down” read. Lauren is a healer, educator, community activist, and writer who talks about recovery from generational trauma, because she’s been through it with her alcoholic mother and bank-robbing father. Oh, and that’s just the beginning. She talks about the day she decided to be proactive in her healing from trauma, and what she did to get there. It wasn’t easy, but she’s done it, and her book is an inspiration to all of us on how we can cut the chord to generational trauma, too.

Love Thyself

Is it possible to experience healing after having a traumatic childhood characterized by neglect, sexual assault, and crime? The answer is yes, but it takes a brave soul to stare down the trauma of their past only to come out the other side stronger and able to love oneself. Join me and Lauren Dollie Duke as we uncork the story about how writing, therapy, and yoga helped her empowered her to heal the wounds of her past and find her voice. Listen as she tells the tale of how she shed the overwhelming weight of shame that she’d been carrying around since childhood and why it was so important for her to immortalize these experiences in her memoir, Sh!thouse.

The Focus is Each other

Lauren Dollie Duke is a force within the yoga, trauma and healing community. She’s a writer, educator, entrepreneur, and community activist. She’s taught thousands of yoga students over the last 15 years, led dozens of international retreats, and continues to push the edge between yoga, mental health, and trauma. She founded a one-of-a-kind community center and yoga studio in Encinitas, California. In a sea of corporate yoga, where most independent studios don't survive, she created a thriving community, teaching and hosting a variety of sold-out yoga classes, educational seminars, and writing workshops. She devotes her time to helping educate people on the anatomy of trauma and how those experiences are woven into the tapestry of our lives. She has studied with the world’s leading traumatologists: Bessel van der Kolk, Peter A. Levine, Gabor Mate, and Stephen Porges. Lauren's book, Sh!thouse: A Memoir, was published in January 2022!

Sh!thouse, A story of brutal girlhood

A lot of the work that I'm doing now is because of what happened in the backseat of that car...I would be lying if I said that that is resolved... I am recognizing that I still have a freeze response… It's taken me nine years of resisting that there was still work to be done from that - because I didn't want to investigate it… I lived with a very, very deep sense of shame until the last few years… The event plus the shame created this shut-down - a lack of circulation, a lack of life, a lack of movement in the middle part of my body… And even though I couldn't articulate it, I [began] moving toward something that was regulating my nervous system and making me feel better... So I think it's this really beautiful dance between the top-down information that I've learned and the bottom-up primal work that I've been doing. It's helping me put myself back together."

In this episode, Molly interviews Lauren Dollie Duke about her new memoir, Sh!thouse, which is the story of her own brutal girlhood and her ongoing journey of untangling herself from intergenerational trauma.

rewiring your narrative

Lauren Dollie Duke was seven when she helped her stepfather boost rum bottles from the local liquor store. The following year, her biological father took her to a hotel room and shot up heroin in the bathroom. The next day he robbed a bank with a finger gun. When he was released from prison years later, he moved into Lauren’s basement. They spent the weekends smoking cartons of cigarettes, diving into dumpsters, and swindling used cars.

In her brand new memoir Shithouse, Lauren shows how it’s possible for good people to do bad things, and what it takes to create peace with where you come from in order to find happiness.
